Patamanjari Ragini is an early morning melody associated with Autumn (September–November). This painting accords with the melody’s imagery as envisioned in the Rajasthani tradition with Patamanjari Ragini depicted as a woman distraught by the absence of her lover and sitting dejectedly with her head supported by her hand. She is being consoled by a confidante, who is occasionally shown singing. They are seated on a porch in a palace compound with a forlorn deer resting in the foreground. Stylistically, the painting is descended from Mughal artistic traditions in terms of its figural style and complex painted floral borders. See also M.77.154.8 and M.86.345.7.
