Curatorial Notes

In his work, Vik Muniz pushes the boundaries between representation and perception. At first glance, these images seem to be delicate pencil drawings of everyday objects. Upon closer inspection, however, the viewer realizes that they are photographs of items made of wire. According to Muniz, the works from the Wire series are a way of fusing two seemingly contentious media—photography and drawing—in a single image. When you blend these two kinds of representations, you create a perceptual rift—you are not just looking at something, you are actually feeling vision itself.
