Curatorial Notes

This is Diego Rivera’s only known easel portrait of his wife, Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). The work, which dates from a turbulent period in the couple's life, was kept by Rivera in his studio until his untimely death in 1957. The blue and green background recalls some of Henri Matisse's (1869–1954) portraits, with the use of bold fields of color to frame the sitter's face.
