The Federal Works Agency commissioned Richard Neutra to design the Channel Heights community near the Los Angeles harbor, conceived to provide wartime housing for shipyard workers. In order to maximize space in the cramped multifamily dwellings, Neutra included patios and large glass windows to open each unit to the outdoors and built in bulkier pieces of furniture. He designed this versatile chair employing inexpensive materials that could be used both indoors and out.
