The British novelist and playwright William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) gained an international reputation for his stories based on an insightful analysis of human frailties.
Maugham agreed to sit for Davidson and invited him to visit him in his villa on Cape Ferrat, near Nice, France. Davidson found Maugham very gracious and portrayed him as a benign gentleman.
