Curatorial Notes

Jeanne Mammen worked primarily as a commercial artist for women’s magazines, and often depicted the lively lesbian nightlife that flourished in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. In this lithograph, her depiction avoids the sensational or voyeuristic, but is a sensitive portrayal of queer life from a queer woman’s point of view. Mammen’s art generally celebrated the cosmopolitan Neue Frau (new woman), a symbol of 1920s modernity whose dress, hair style, and demeanor defied traditional gender norms.
