Curatorial Notes

Op and kinetic artist Rogelio Polesello experimented with light and color, emphasizing the participation of the viewer to activate his sculptures. The carved lenses of this large plaque multiply and reduce the size of the viewer’s reflection, creating a distortion of reality. The acrylic object both contains and diffuses the vibrant colors, transforming the space around it. Polesello’s signature acrylic sculptures exemplify his interest in the intersection of art and design. He began working with the material in 1966, inspired by Plástica con plásticos—a landmark exhibition at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires that encouraged the exploration of this industrial product in the fine arts. The exhibition’s title plays on the linguistic similarity between the “plastic,” or visual, arts (artes plásticas) and plastics (plásticos) as a material, an amalgamation inherent in Polesello’s work.
