Provenance
Documented as a possession of Queen Ka’ahumanu (1768-1832), the primary wife of King Kamehameha I. Upon his death in 1819, she became the co-regent for a succession of his sons, often serving as the most influential authority within the Hawaiian Islands. Ka’ahumanu was instrumental in the conversion of Hawaiians to Christianity and gifted this kapa to the primary American missionary at the time, Reverend Hiram Bingham.
