Afsoon’s series, "Persian Expressions," is inspired by the allegorical and often humorous messages behind popular Persian proverbs. The artist illustrates these amusing sayings according to her own spontaneous, subjective, and comical imagination. In Cats, she uses a proverb from a musical folk game that roughly translates to the English phrase, "don’t rock the boat." In the game, children pretend to be naughty mice who advise each other on how to be safe from the cat. Here, Afsoon depicts a woman with cats on her head, perhaps as a playful reference to the game and to naughty thoughts. Born in Iran in 1961 but now based in London, Afsoon has shown her work in multiple solo and group exhibitions around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Morocco, Dubai, and Jeddah. As a writer, she has also published a novel and a number of short stories.
