Curatorial Notes

Following in the tradition of previous monarchs, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi continued the institution of the salaam ceremony in which chief courtiers and military officials assembled to pay their respects to the Shah, in this instance on the occasion of his 58th birthday. On the Shah’s right is Amir-Abbas Hoveyda, Iran’s longest-serving Prime Minister (1965-1977). In less than two years, the Shah would be in exile and Hoveyda dead, executed by the Islamic Revolutionary Court.
