Curatorial Notes

Avant-garde Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (known as Mariano) created many paintings of roosters throughout his career. Connected to traditions of rural guajiro farming communities and the Afro-Cuban religion Santería, the rooster is an iconic image of Cuban pride and masculinity. This painting features a single majestic rooster, with his feathers painted in the colors of the Cuban flag: red, white, and blue.
