Curatorial Notes
Mirza Riza Kirmani, who was quickly captured after assassinating the shah, is shown here slouched in a golden cage as he is pulled through the deserted city streets towards his imprisonment and eventual punishment. A guard holds on to the carriage while tipping his hat toward the viewer. A poster of Nasir al-Din Shah hangs on the wall of a building now defaced by red graffiti, reflecting the shah’s demise. While this photograph imagines Mirza Riza’s long route to his execution, a small sign on the right indicates no photography allowed, creating a sense of irony that further illuminates the often dark humor that marks Filizadeh’s work.
