Whistler and Venice, January 29-May 28, 2003

From the summer of 1880, Whistler lived along the Riva degli Schiavoni in an apartment with views of San Giorgio Maggiore and Santa Maria della Salute. Here he portrayed the street scene along the Riva. The etching typifies Whistler’s compositions in which he artfully counterbalanced light and shadow, avoided strong outlines, and used loosely defined spaces, most notably here in the foreground and on the facade of the building at the left.
