Curatorial Notes
Rather than representing the actual scourging, the artist illustrated Christ on his way to the flagellation. Depicting that anticipatory moment with such intense emotion is typical of Daniele Crespi, a Milanese artist famous for his somber and powerful religious images. Slightly younger than Caravaggio, Crespi shares with him common Milanese roots, but in this work demonstrates also an awareness of Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro.
