Curatorial Notes

The monumental figure at the center of this bowl is a harpy, a creature from classical mythology consisting of a bird torso and human, most often female, head. Here the painter has carefully composed the monster’s tail and lower wing to follow the curved contours of the vessel’s rim as a means of filling the space.
