Modernist Marsden Hartley produced a dynamic body of paintings while living in Berlin from 1913 to 1915. Abstraction: Blue, Yellow and Green demonstrates the artist’s bold use of color and exemplifies his experiments with abstraction during this period. Hartley’s application of thick paint, along with the interplay of geometric shapes in primary and secondary hues, may suggest a formal exploration of color theory or a more symbolic approach to spirituality.
