The expansion of Europe’s railways in the mid-nineteenth century encouraged city dwellers to travel to the seaside for their health. Seaside fashions incorporated fabrics, garments, and trimmings suitable for the coastal climate and lifestyle, while reflecting urban trends like the crinoline and bustle. This ensemble of a loose jacket (called a paletot) and a matching bodice and skirt is machine-embroidered with stylized geometric and floral motifs.
