Curatorial Notes

The quest for a narrow waistline was not exclusive to women; in the early nineteenth century, some men also wore boned and tightly laced corsets. Because vests were short, modified waist cinchers or firmly stiffened inner belts continued to be worn throughout the century to minimize unsightly bulges that blemished the streamlined effect of fine tailoring.
