Curatorial Notes: To accommodate the upward sweep of skirts to the back, a hybrid crinoline with bustle, the crinolette, was invented to support the billowing drapery of still massive skirts. Some retained a conical shape with short posterior hoops; others were closed flat in the front with a series of half hoops at the back. Attached ties regulated the tension and adjusted the petticoat’s fullness.
