Curatorial Notes

Many Islamic objects survive in an incomplete state and separated from the original contexts for which they were created. Such is the case with this beautifully carved wood panel that is dated and localized based on stylistic comparisons with better-documented works of art from thirteenth-century Egypt. It may have been part of a cenotaph in a mausoleum, or since wood is rare in Egypt and considered a luxury, it may have been part of an architectural element or furnishing from a secular milieu.
