Curatorial Notes

A form of luxury ware, luster-painted ceramics are characterized by the metallic sheen of their glaze, for which they were prized. This shallow drinking cup is a particularly fine example due to its accomplished painting. When it was filled, the gleam of its glaze may have caught the light, allowing the drinker to glimpse the swirling bird design at the cup’s center as the libation was consumed.
