Curatorial Notes

Along with endowing religious complexes such as mosques, tombs, and religious schools (madrasas), wealthy Muslim patrons of the medieval period also commissioned sets of Qur’ans for each institution. One of these sets was likely the genesis of these pages. Such manuscripts were often lavishly made, as seen in the fine materials and embellishment of these folios. They undoubtedly required many hours of labor and great cost as the text was written in gold ink painstakingly outlined in black. Similarly, the use of gold verse markers and high-quality paper with generous margins indicates that it was an expensive manuscript.
