Charles and Ray Eames moved to Los Angeles in 1941 and continued to experiment with molded plywood. They proposed to the U.S. Navy that molded-plywood splints for wounded servicemen and women would be more lightweight and effective than the metal ones then in use. In 1942 they received a contract and began production, making this splint the first mass-produced molded-plywood product with compound curves.
