Curatorial Notes

From the exhibition Thomas Cole in Italy and Switzerland, 1841-1842
August 16, 2002-January 29, 2003

The medieval castle of Spiez, situated on Lake Thun, was and remains a popular destination for travelers to the Bernese Alps. Cole made notes on this drawing, dated October 19, to help him remember the scene when he returned to the studio: “The foliage extremely rich and full of sunlight / mostly Elms-Oaks-Chestnuts.”
