Curatorial Notes

This depiction of an elegant young dandy holding a flower sprig exemplifies the types of pen-and-ink drawings that became popular in seventeenth-century Iran. Here the artist uses line to capture the fullness of the youth’s turban, the swaying folds of his robe, and the delicate tendrils of curled hair around his face, imbuing the drawing with a subtle lyricism and reinforcing the man’s leisurely attitude.
