Otto Natzler described the surface of this bowl as “a very hard grey crusty lava glaze with bright turquoise overflow...contrasting the elements of Earth and Water as part of the ceramic medium.” Otto, the glaze chemist, and his wife, Gertrud, the potter, drew on techniques learned in their native Vienna but applied the colors and textures found in the California landscape to thousands of ceramic vessels produced over their long career.
