Thousands of graves have been discovered on the island of Jaina, which may have served as a necropolis for nobility from the nearby cities of the Yucatán Peninsula. Small sculptures such as this representation of a nobleman were found in many of the tombs. Constructed as hollow or solid tubes of clay, the figures were dressed by adding thin slabs of clay cut as clothing. Their dress and accoutrements may reflect the occupation or social status of the deceased, and facial features were delicately shaped to portray individual characters.
