Curatorial Notes
Whistler and Venice,
January 29- May 28, 2003
Whistler compressed the perspectival view from across the canal into this garden so that the textures and lines of the crumbling walls, tree branches, and garden blend together flatly. His glimpse into everyday private life in Venice emphasizes aesthetics over realistic depiction.
