Jennifer West’s Smoke Cloud images began as cell phone shots of smoke plumes from the El Dorado Fire of 2020. West was on a hike nearby and experienced the shock of the fire firsthand; and even while attempting to reconnect with nature, she had her cell phone with her to capture this encroachment of human activity. Presenting each digital image on a flatscreen monitor placed on the floor, she then took another iteration of images from a disposable camera. The film negatives from this shoot were then painted and the dried filmstrips scanned to produce a trio of color photographs (see also M.2022.70.1, .3). The images contain dueling hot and cool tones, evoking nature, technology, and the human bridge between.
