Pablo Albarenga felt there was a void of imagery depicting the peoples of the Amazon—out of balance with the saturation of images of the disappearing forest and giving voice to those who have the most to lose by its slow destruction. His portraits pair individuals with aerial views of their green spaces. Vero is the midwife of her village in the Ecuadorian Amazon and uses both modern instruments and traditional plants in her practice. Many Achuar women give birth alone in the rainforest, and Vero’s image is paired with the structure she built to provide a safe place for birthing.
