Curatorial Notes

Picasso’s rendering of artist and author Françoise Gilot, his partner from 1943 to 1953 and the mother of two of his children, was one of a series of paintings of women seated in chairs. It also signals the beginning of a trend in the 1950s and 1960s when Picasso explored single, frontal figures flattened around a central axis.
