In 2005, American-trained architect Bijoy Jain established the award-winning practice Studio Mumbai in his hometown. Collaborating with skilled local artisans through a process of prototypes and mock-ups, the firm has built a reputation for site-specificity and sustainability. Originally known for working in wood, the studio made extensive use of brick in the Ahmedabad House (2012-2014) built in the eponymous city (located in the state of Gujarat). In addition, works exploring the artistic potential of the miniature bricks made for architectural models from the mud and water onsite at Studio Mumbai were featured in the exhibition "Demolition Series" (2013) at Gallery Chemould, Mumbai. The curved openwork arrangement of the miniature bricks in the seatback of the Brick Study III bench is inspired by the temporary centering structures upon which Jain saw new stonework being laid when the sixteenth-century tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in Delhi was recently restored. The bench is part of Studio Mumbai’s first range of furniture, and was produced for Maniera, a Brussels based gallery specializing in artist and architect designed pieces for the home.
