This elegant footed bowl was first shown in the Pasadena Art Museum’s 10th California Design exhibition—the 1968 iteration of this landmark series curated by Eudorah Moore (1918-2013) starting in 1962. Held from 1954 through 1976, these exhibitions helped define the history of design and craft in the state. Since the majority of the metalwork featured was jewelry, surviving hollowware from these shows is scarce. Prominently illustrated in the exhibition’s catalogue, this bowl was made by college art professor Charles Escott during his postgraduate training with influential metal instructor Alvin Pine (1933-2010) at California State University, Long Beach. Escott participated in several other juried exhibitions in the period including the American Craft Council’s Craftsmen USA ’66 (1966) and the Society of North American Goldsmiths’ first exhibition Goldsmith ’70 (1970).
