Curatorial Notes

Maryam Zandi was one of the few women photojournalists to document the revolution; her carefully framed and often provocative compositions testify to her talent and her bravery. Here Zandi’s photograph documents the elated crowds (a member of which holds aloft a newspaper featuring the historic headline, "The Shah Left") that filled Tehran’s streets following the departure of the shah January 16, 1979.
