Footnotes

(1) A preliminary investigation in the Pierre Matisse Gallery Archives at the Morgan Library revealed that Berggruen & Cie. purchased seven Matisse drawings from the gallery on 16 November 1973 and among the group is sm# 7485 #17 Head Resting on Hand. Unfortunately there are no dimensions or further details included in these initial records to verify with certainty that this is Portrait of a Woman Resting on Her Elbow.

(2) According to Olivier Berggruen, his father Heinz sold the Berggruen gallery archives in 1991, and the family is uncertain where they are currently. However, they may be in the possession of Guy Loudmer in Paris (email to lacma, 13 October 2015).

(3) This drawing was listed in the 1982 sale catalogue as “Property of Prince Franz of Bavaria.” He later became Herzog von Bayern (Duke of Bavaria) upon the death of his father.
