Curatorial Notes

Fereydoun Ave has created several series featuring the epic hero Rustam represented by photographs of Abbas Jadidi, an Iranian wrestler who won the 1996 Olympic silver medal. While Rustam is portrayed as triumphant in other works, here, in a hostile environment populated by hyenas and vultures, he is bereft. The ominous splashes of red paint, the wild animals, and Rustam’s isolation and visible exhaustion suggest an unfavorable end for the diminished hero.
