Curatorial Notes
Lopez often painted city views with masses of figures. In this delicately tinted watercolor hundreds of people are gathered in a city plaza, perhaps for a religious festival. The large expanse of open land and distant oil tanks suggest that the event is taking place in a large industrial center, perhaps Los Angeles. Completed only a few years after Lopez was a student, the watercolor is quite sophisticated, displaying an assured control of the fluid medium and a mastery of abstract shapes. The cool hues dominating the scene suggest a cold, wintry day. Lopez employed a similar blue tonality for his New York cityscapes.
