Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned the Description de l’Égypte, a series of publications recording the work of about 160 civilian scholars and scientists who accompanied the French expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1801. Following the initial survey, approximately 2,000 artists and technicians, including 400 engravers, compiled the initial research into multiple volumes. This comprehensive documentation of Egypt, both ancient and modern, as it existed in the late eighteenth century also provides a natural history of the region. Unfortunately, the original manuscript of the Description de l’Égypte was destroyed by an arson-set fire that burned the library of the Institut d’Égypte in December 2011 during clashes between protesters and the government near Tahrir Square, Cairo.
