Curatorial Notes

Greater Los Angeles is home to the largest population of Iranians outside of Iran. Among the smaller group that collects art, Mahmood Sabzi has been the Iranian-American artist of choice. This work with its traditional Persian gold-illuminated borders surrounding charred gray squares, reflects the artist's mixed memories of Iran, which he left in the early 1980s, following combat service in the Iran-Iraq war. Sabzi's best works to date are his more personal pieces such as this.
