Curatorial Notes
According to James 0. McReynolds, his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Phillips McReynolds, commissioned this painting from Wendt. Its unusual proportions may indicate that it was intended for a specific location in the McReynoldses’ house. The painting would have been very successful as a decorative design, the vigor of its brushwork enlivening the generally flat and rhythmic composition.
