Curatorial Notes
Óscar Muñoz has created a stirring body of work that deals with notions of memory and loss as they relate to political violence in his home country of Colombia. Project for a Memorial (Proyecto para un memorial) consists of video and photographic documentation. Using as a guide photographs of men and women found in the obituary pages of Colombian newspapers, Muñoz renders a likeness on a slab of stone or concrete. The images cohere rapidly, but each lasts only a minute or so, until time and evaporation begin to claim it. Five mounted screens or wall projections show the process from start to finish, a span of just a few minutes. The quick creation of the images and their swift dissolution is a poignant reminder of the evanescence of life. Ilona Katzew, 2008
