Curatorial Notes

Richard Pousette-Dart was the first Abstract Expressionist to paint on a monumental scale. Works such as The Edge are composed of a dense and colorful constellation of circles, arcs, triangles, and swirling lines arranged within an irregular grid. His biomorphic and geometric forms are indebted to Surrealism as well as to motifs found in African, Oceanic, and Native American art. Expressing his combined interest in formalism and his devout spirituality, Pousette-Dart described his work as “the dynamic balance, or edge, between the conscious and unconscious.”
