Frederick Walter Davis and William Spratling were the first to introduce the use of amethyst into their silver designs. Amethyst quartz was inexpensive and mined in Mexico. The contrast of the crazed, semi-transparent stone with the shiny, smooth surface of the silver created a dramatic effect.
