The starkly contrasting tones and high vantage point reduce the physicality of the buildings and automobiles in the context of the landscape. Here they resemble toy houses and cars plunked down at random. The dirt piles and debris in the foreground are evidence of the impact of construction on the land. The road, meant to connect the houses with a place not in the frame, remains unfinished and seems to lead nowhere, making its purpose farcical in comparison to the presence of the mountains behind.
