George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), an Irish, born dramatist, critic, and wit, is best known for his comedies and satires, including Man and Superman (1903), Major Barbara (1905), and Pygmalion (1913). Davidson first met Shaw in 1914 and was much impressed by his humor and intelligence. The dramatist, however, refused to sit for him. Years later, when Shaw finally agreed to pose, Davidson portrayed him as a genial, elderly gentleman. The dramatist himself noted that Davidson was the only artist to capture his sense of humor. There is also an example in terra-cotta in the estate of the artist.
