Arthur James, the first Earl of Balfour (1848-1930), was prime minister of the United Kingdom, 1902-5....
Arthur James, the first Earl of Balfour (1848-1930), was prime minister of the United Kingdom, 1902-5. During World War I he served as minister of foreign affairs and in 1917 issued a declaration favoring the establishment in Palestine of a national Jewish homeland. Davidson modeled this sculpture as part of a series of Allied leaders. It was done from life while Balfour was attending the Paris Peace Conference in 1920. The broad planes of the head are typical of Davidson’s early portraits.
