This sun-dappled garden scene depicts Henriette Darricarrère (on the left) relaxing with Henri Matisse’s daughter, Marguerite, and his dog at the artist’s residence outside Paris. Marguerite’s mask-like face, which reflects Matisse’s long-standing interest in African art, contrasts sharply with Henriette’s simply rendered features. Though this work marks a departure from Matisse’s shockingly vibrant Fauve period, it displays his interest in exploring the interaction of pattern and color even in conventional depictions of outdoor leisure. Tea, the largest painting executed by the artist following World War I, was the last major Matisse painting acquired by Michael and Sarah Stein, the brother and sister-in-law of Gertrude Stein and major collectors of modern art.
