From the exhibition Thomas Cole in Italy and Switzerland, 1841-1842 August 16, 2002-January 29, 2003 The mountain in the center of this drawing is the Jungfrau (virgin), one of the most famous peaks in the Swiss Alps. At the center is the Mönch (monk), with the Eiger (ogre) to the right. From Lake Thun or Brienz, one of which is in the foreground, these three landmark peaks should appear with Jungfrau on the right and the Eiger on the left. Cole likely altered the natural scenery in this drawing to position the Jungfrau rising dramatically above the convergence of the two downward sloping foothills in the middle ground.
