The artist (1870-1938), Güstrow, Germany. Collection of Walter Stein; given in 1954 to the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art; transferred in 1961 to LACMA.

In 1906, Ernst Barlach traveled from Germany to Russia, during which his observations of laborers working in the fields had an immediate impact on his beginnings as a sculptor. Russian Lovers, inspired by this trip, exists in bronze and also in white porcelain, which suggests the vast Russian winter landscapes.
