Walter Sanford Dole was the son of George H. Dole and Clara Rowell. George was Sanford Ballard Dole's brother, who was the 1st Territortial Governor of Hawai'i. Sanford Dole's parents were Protestant missionaries from Maine and other Dole family members became politicians and businessmen in Hawai'i (Dole Family Papers: Finding Aid, Online Archive of California).
